Zen Maker Camp – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) Ages 7 to 11 and 12 to 15

Zen Maker Camp – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) Ages 7 to 11 and 12 to 15
Zen Maker Camps! This Summer, Zen Maker Lab, will once again be hosting a number of unique maker camps where kids will learn about science, technology, engineering, art and math! For the last two years, our camps have sold out and we anticipate the same this year so best not to wait until the last minute to register. From art, 3D design and printing, to electronics and Python coding with Raspberry Pi, from Minecraft mods, and robotics to an engineering project, your kids will be introduced or expand their existing skills in this important area.  No experience necessary!  It's a great way for your child to have fun while learning some really useful skills, helping prepare them for the future. This year we will be adding some 3D 360 and VR with a Google cardboard Virtual Reality Kit!  We will also be introducing some wearable technology using flextronics! Finally we will have a new aquafarm from our partner Purity Aqua Farms. We have lots of new equipment since last year as well including the Carvey. For kids that are coming to Zen Maker Lab for their first time, the camp will be a "sampler" covering an introduction to art and sketching, 3D design and 3D printing, coding, Minecraft and 3D printing, bridge building, metal works, electronics, Arduino and more. For kids that have already taken this starter maker camp before, we will get them focused on a more advanced maker project, such as a drawbot (a programmable robot that draws), an eggbot (a robot controlled by code that draws easter egg designs), a robotic arm, a mini-drone or a wearable tech fashion project. Because the camp is being held at ZEN 247, an innovation centre that includes a maker lab, digital media centre, and hardware startup tech incubator, your child will have access to technology, equipment and a unique "real life" tech environment that you just won't find anywhere else! They can get a feel what it's like working in a tech space. Whether it is building a full colour model in our industrial powder 3D printer or printing 3D designs in our 3D printer farm, or laser cutting parts for projects, or printing posters on large format printers, we get a lot of comments like "best camp ever" and "this is the coolest place there is!". Kids can do hands-on projects that just aren't possible in other settings. Instead of just making robots from kits, participants can leverage their creativity and make robots from scratch using parts they 3D print and laser cut and with the latest "real life" electronics. They are also taught by industry leaders that are active in their fields and that are passionate about introducing kids to cutting edge technology. You can see our instructors page for more details.  We also have a high instructor to student ratio with at least oneinstructor and one to two helpers for every ten kids. Kids will have fun while learning some valuable skills. As part of the camp, participants will receive a 3D printed torso of themselves (approximately 5 cm tall), a 3D digital file of their torso scan, a 3D printed object that they design from a 3D modeling tool (approximately 5 cm tall), a laser cut sign, a poster with their photo from a large format printer, a maker kit filled with a number of small items and a light box.  The maker kit includes links to websites and other resources so they can continue making things from home. You can register your child or children in the five day camp, Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 3:30 p.m. or you can register your child for the four day camp, Monday to Thursday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. The fifth day (Friday) is an "Illlustration, Graphic Design and Printing" morning at Zen Digital where participants will learn about basic illustration principles, colour and design theory and will design a poster that can be printed on the large format printer. We are just a 15 minute sea bus ride from downtown and a short walk from the seabus station. We are also very accessible from Highway 1 and the Main Street exit. Laptops Laptops can be rented for a week or children can bring their own laptop. During breaks, kids will get good exercise in the nearby park and learn an innovative sport, floorball, in partnership with the BC Floorball Association and Floorball Plus. Flexibility with Ages Our camps are for children 7 to 11 and youth 12 to 15.  We divide the kids into groups based on age and experience level and keep a close eye on the dynamics to make sure everyone is having fun and enjoying the projects, being challenged in an empowering and age appropriate way. The younger kids have their camp in Zen Play Lab at 280 East 1st, right next to the maker lab at 272 East 1st and the older kids have their camp in a separate room from the younger kids in the mezzanine level of the maker lab and digital media centre at 272 East 1st (all in the same building). Boys and Girls Our camps appeal to both boys and girls and we encourage everyone to try out the various areas of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. There is something for everyone, not just the more "technical" oriented kids. Siblings If you are registering more than one child from the same family in one of our camps, you can get a 15% discount off your registration.  When registering, you can use the discount code "sibling" (without quotes) to get this discount for all of your children you are registering. Friend Referrals If your child refers a friend or friends, both you and your friend can use the code "friend" to get a 10% discount off your registration. When using this discount code, please just send us an email at info@zenmakerlab.com to let us know which friend you were referred by or that you referred. Supplies Supplies that kids are required to use will be included in the cost of the camp (approximately 0 to 0 worth of supplies at regular retail price per child). There may be some additional, optional items that parents could purchase for their kids if they like such as a Raspberry Pi mini-computer pre-installed with software. We will provide full details at the beginning of the camp on these optional items. We have a small store area in Zen Play Lab where you can take a look at other maker supplies and kits if you like. Additional Questions If you have additional questions, you can reach us at 604-770-2936 (office) or email us at info@zenmakerlab.com. Our website at zenmakerlab.com also includes information about other programs we offer such as monthly memberships to our maker space and after-school programs.
