ONLINE EDUCATION (Master of Arts in Education/Secondary Teacher Education)
The Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education is specifically geared toward individuals with no prior teaching experience who are interested in gaining initial teaching licensure in secondary education. Along with core courses, you will study behavior management, curriculum development and other courses key to your competency in the field of education. This program will prepare you for licensure and will ensure that student teaching requirements are met.
The Master of Arts in Secondary Education provides students with intensive professional preparation in six core areas: Pedagogy, Curriculum, Educational Foundations, Educational Technology, Multicultural Education, as well as Educational Research. The program enables practicing teachers to explore theoretical concepts that relate directly to their instruction to improve instructional effectiveness. To complete the requirements for the degree, students elect four additional courses through which they enhance their knowledge of content or pursue additional course work in the six core areas.

The Master of Arts in Education/Secondary Teacher Education is a graduate degree program preparing candidates for teacher licensure. The guiding philosophy of the program is to provide the adult student, who already has a degree in a discipline other than education, with the skills and knowledge that will allow them to become a competent and effective educator. This program focuses on secondary student learning by improving the educator’s responsibility for that learning.
Student teaching is an integral component of the Teacher Education Program. It provides students with a field-based experience at the appropriate grade and content level. Student teachers work with a cooperating teacher from a school site and with a faculty advisor. The student teaching experience is designed to emphasize the achievement of state standards leading to certification and to present individuals with growth opportunities that best prepare them to assume the duties of a certified classroom teacher. Throughout the program, students are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of verified field experiences, covering a variety of developmental levels. The focus of each observation will relate to specific course content. Documentation will be maintained in the student’s professional portfolio.
Program Information and Requirements
An online master’s degree program in secondary teacher education can be completed in two or three years. Learners may need to start by completing the graduate certificate in education and transfer the credits into the master’s degree program. They can complete the courses asynchronously, which means there are no required class times, or synchronously, which involves logging into lessons that take place in real-time. For asynchronous courses, they can watch pre-recorded lessons around their schedule, but still have specific due dates and times for assignments, tests and quizzes. Participants don’t have any on-campus requirements, but they will need to complete a semester-long student teaching experience at a public or private school near them.

Teacher education courses provide learners with the skills to manage a classroom and prepare lessons. They also address specific teaching methods for individual subjects. Aspiring teachers also spend a semester in a classroom, working under the supervision of a licensed teacher.
This course covers the academic needs of adolescents and how to meet them in a classroom environment. Topics address the needs of students in at-risk populations, multi-cultural students and special education students.
Issues in Secondary Education
Aspiring teachers explore issues that can make teaching high school students difficult. They identify learning problems and difficulties that can arise while teaching in urban, rural or suburban schools.
This class explores issues in maintaining safety in the school and handling the increasing levels of school violence. Lessons include creating a classroom environment and encouraging students to be productive.
Technology in the Classroom
Individuals study methods for using technology in the classroom to improve their students’ learning experiences. For instance, in the foreign language or English as a Second Language classroom, students use technology to explore pronunciation and engage in communication.
Teaching in Secondary Education
This class covers methods for teaching high school students. Students study ways to teach writing and literature while incorporating recent academic theories.
